Pre-trip Mount Washington Blog by Joan Newkirk
Here in our third grade at Fisher Mitchell School we tied our study of weather with literacy activities. Eric Pinder’s book Cat in the Clouds was the perfect way to meld science and literacy, and to launch the unit.
Our entire school became involved during our “Blizzard of the Books” reading initiative. The staff presented a silly skit based on the arrival of a blizzard. I had written the skit to show my students an authentic purpose for writing and introduce some basic storm concepts. Here is a link to the skit:

Our school also hosted Eric Pinder to conduct workshops with all the students. He graciously spent the entire day at our school sharing his passion about his time spent on Mount Washington and writing.
The class also has been tracking the local weather and comparing it with the daily report from the Weather Observatory. Of course they are amazed by the wind speed and wonder how equipment, people, and Marty stay secure on the summit.
The third graders used the Flipgrid platform to send questions to Marty the cat and the scientists on the mountain. Here is a link to the Flipgrid: Third Graders' Questions for Marty
