I teach Second Grade at a public elementary school just down the road from Mount Washington in northern, NH. Although we are local to the area, most of my students are unaware of the arctic landscape and the extreme weather conditions that exist on this neighboring mountain.
I am excited to share this opportunity with them and use it to teach about weather! We make daily observations as we look to the sky from our classroom windows, but post summit trip, students will be introduced to different weather tools and get to use them to measure weather! Students will act as scientists as they use handheld weather meters to record air temperature, wind speed and direction and atmospheric pressure. They'll also be measuring and mapping daily precipitation. Students will be developing questions for our virtual connection with meteorologists to gain a better understanding of why Mount Washington has such extreme weather.
