Week 6: Post Trip Report
March 26th, 2017
Our adventure in the SnowCat on March 15th brought us around 4,300 ft. on the mountain. It was the day after a nor’easter; we had just had a snow day the day before! My traveling companion, Ms. Brown, and I were hopeful, but knew it would be hard with all of the fresh snow. We got to a point where the snow drifts were too large to blade through. Alas, we had to make our way back down after the staff discussed solutions. However, we still had plenty of fun playing in the snow and measuring the temperature and wind conditions with our Kestrel.
Luckily, we had made a plan to still have the staff at the summit video call down to our classrooms back in Lovell, so our students still got to see someone at the top and ask their questions. My 4th and 5th graders had just done research projects on extreme weather (hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, droughts) and were psyched to get to talk about extreme weather that happens so close to them.
Back at school the next day, my students were eager to hear about the trip and see pictures of where I was. Even though we didn’t get to the summit, it was still an amazing experience, and was a lot of fun for the students learn about in this authentic way.
