Mount Washington Momentarily the Second Coldest Place on Earth Friday
In case you missed the MWO Facebook post this past Friday morning from our summit staff:
"-35°F is the coldest temperature the summit of Mount Washington has recorded this early in the winter season since December 1993, when -36°F was reached on the 27th.
"-35°F is the coldest temperature the summit of Mount Washington has recorded this early in the winter season since December 1993, when -36°F was reached on the 27th.
Combine our current -35°F with 70 mph winds, and our current wind chill value stands at a bone-chilling -86°F!"
At this point in time, the summit of Mount Washington was considered the second coldest place on Earth behind Watson Lake in the Yukon Territories at -40F [source: http://www.wx-now.com/Weather/WxExtremes (a great place to compare the hottest and coldest places in the US and the World)]; however, the winds were calm there vs. a 70 MPH sustained wind on Mount Washington.
Our summit staff took advantage of the cold to perform a 'magic trick' turning boiling water to snow from the very top of the observation tower: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU6-T3Gq5so&t=72s
Can anyone think of some other experiments they might want to try in below zero temperatures, hurricane force winds or heavy icing conditions?
